This is a couple blocks from us - had no idea it was a thing. I suppose it’s the new catalytic converter scam ...

My dad's buddy ran a body shop (he passed away a few years ago) and I remember back in the early 2000s it was headlight assemblies. This is back when HIDs were just coming out, and the replacement ones were very expensive. And he said about once a week someone would show up at his body shop offering to sell him genuine OEM headlight assemblies for a couple hundred bucks.

Huh. It makes me wonder how they are getting them off. Exposed fasteners? Breaking them off? Can they be tracked with serial numbers?

Someone once stole the battery out of my brother’s Corolla. That was a weird one.

Hope they can get that under control. Of course I also feel like providing heavily subsidized street parking is a waste, but that doesn’t mean people who take advantage should have their cars messed with.
Also this is your building right:
For those who may have noticed the recent appearance of a homeless encampment under scaffolding at 74th and Amsterdam: Lieutenant Tony Burgio has orchestrated five multi-agency clean-ups, which have included Sanitation, the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, and Emergency Medical Services.
“The scaffolding that is protecting that encampment should be down in about a month,” Malin said. “When the scaffolding goes away and the rain comes down, it’s no longer going to be an attractive location.”
I’m not sure I like the tone here, sounds dangerous close to dealing with vermin rather than people.

My question as well - those things can’t be sawn off like a cat.

That is across the street from our building (old National Bank Building) and the people sleeping rough there never gave anyone a problem. I walked by them every day. It seemed like they had a small community, almost.

These people make their own market. To curtail thievery, parts sellers should not buy these things from walk ins. I’ve been fortunate, as the only thing that was stolen from one of my vehicles was the spare tire on my truck. I should have had it padlocked but I didn’t know this was a thing until it happened to me.

the battery acid is used in drug production
friend had his integra gsr stolen, we assumed the worst, but it was recovered behind a cheap motel with several other stolen cars, only thing taken was batteries. The police informed us it was likely drug related.

Yeesh. Sulfuric acid, huh? That’s pretty hardcore.
